Azamgarh: One person was killed and two others were injured when supporters of BJP MP Ramakant Yadav allegedly opened fire on activists of Ulema Council following a minor dispute over not giving way to a vehicle in Phoolpur area here on Wednesday.
"One Abdul Rahman (22) died on way to Varanasi where he was taken for medical aid while two others were injured. A case of murder and attempt to murder has been lodged against BJP MP Ramakant Yadav (from Azamgarh) by national convenor of Ulema Council Amir Rashadi," Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) A K Jain told reporters in Lucknow.
He said tension started around 1.45 pm when Yadav's cavalcade tried to overtake Rashadi's car in Jagdishpur area.
Rashadi was on his way to Phoolpur to attend a meeting of the Ulema Council when the incident occurred, Jain said.
"The Ulema Council leader in his FIR had alleged that Ramakant's cavalcade intercepted his vehicle after overtaking it in Jagdishpur and had a dispute with him," Jain said.
The minor dispute took a serious turn when members of both the groups clashed during which Ramakant's men allegedly opened fire, injuring three persons.
Following the clash, tension erupted in this district as local residents blocked traffic at a number of places including Sanjarpur and Sarai Meer and indulged in brick batting and arson in the city area, he said.
