BJP projects big gains in elections 2009

New Delhi:

The mood is upbeat in the saffron parivar. The BJP hopes to make big gains in Gujarat, Bihar, Jharkhand and Assam. The big surprise is BJP's UP assessment. The BJP claims it may get 25 odd seats. Last time it won just 10 seats in UP.

The party admits losses for the NDA in Rajasthan and Punjab.

Since, by its own assessment, it is falling short. The BJP is already on a hunt for new allies.

  • Vasundhra Raje will tackle Naveen Patnaik
  • Venkaiah Naidu has established contact with TDP
  • Jaswant and Modi will talk to Jayalalithaa
  • Sharad Yadav is speaking to Deve Gowda

Beyond the numbers game, the party is also manouvering to beat the Congress.

Says BJP president Rajnath Singh: "The precedence is that President calls the single largest for pre poll alliance."

Beyond the public posturing, on Wednesday senior BJP leaders, who will face the media, discussed how to respond if the verdict is in favour of the party or adverse. It indicates that the battle for Delhi has not been won yet.

Says Shahnawaz Hussain: "Akhiri vote pad gaya hai; Advani PM honge." (Last vote has been cast; Advani will be the Prime Minister).
