BJP Close To Majority In Manipur, Chief Minister Biren Singh Wins Bastion

In 2017, BJP stitched a coalition to form the government under N Biren Singh

The BJP has won 26 seats out of 60 in Manipur and is leading in five constituencies, and looks set to reach the majority mark of 31. In the state, the BJP went solo this time and contested all seats alone.

Incumbent Chief Minister N Biren Singh has won by a margin of over 18,000 votes from Heingang constituency. 

Mr Singh has said the BJP will take time to stake a claim to form a government and added that central leaders of the party will decide the Chief Minister.

"We will take time to stake a claim to form a government, let the results be out. Our national leaders will decide on Chief Minister face, we will focus on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's mantra of inclusive development," he was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

The Congress, on the other hand, forged an alliance of six political parties and named it Manipur Progressive Secular Alliance.

The Congress has won five seats and the National People's Party has won six and is leading in two. The Janata Dal (United) has won six seats and the Naga People's Front five.

Congress had emerged as the single largest party in the 2017 elections winning 28 seats followed by BJP (21). But later, BJP stitched a coalition with the NPP, NPF and LJP to form the government under N Biren Singh as the Chief Minister.
