Lucknow:
Violent clashes broke out in Lucknow today between workers of the BJP and the Samajwadi Party at the former's headquarters.
Workers of the state's ruling Samajwadi Party were protesting against price rise and the hike in rail fares outside the BJP's office when things turned violent.
There were heavy stone pelting and the Samajwadi Party workers tore down posters outside the party office. Some BJP workers were also injured in the clashes.
Members of the BJP have now landed at the Lucknow Superintendent of Police's office and say there was hardly any police presence at the BJP office even when there was prior information of this protest by the Samajwadi Party.
The government had yesterday hiked rail passenger fares by 14.2 per cent and freight fares by 6.5 per cent, in the first dose of a "bitter medicine" Prime Minister Narendra Modi had warned of having to administer to revive the country's economy.
Meanwhile, wholesale price inflation has surged to a five-month high of 6 per cent, driven by a spike in prices of food items like potato and unions.
