PM Modi has urged his lawmakers on a variety of occasions to demonstrate their commitment by attending parliament regularly.
New Delhi:
An all-star lineup of parliamentarians from the BJP has been punished for repeatedly missing meetings of parliamentary committees. Among those who've been dropped from these panels are Varun Gandhi, whose mother Maneka Gandhi is the Family Welfare Minister, former cricketer Kirti Azad, actor Vinod Khanna.
A dozen lawmakers have been removed by the ruling party; they had all allegedly been warned repeatedly by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu to ensure they did not skip the sessions of the committees to which they had been nominated.
"We have decided to give new members to the committee since some members did not have the time, and the party needed to be represented properly in these committees," said Mr Naidu.
The panels combine members of different parties based on their strength in parliament. After internal elections, the BJP will now name a new set of lawmakers to the committees.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged his lawmakers on a variety of occasions to demonstrate their commitment by attending parliament regularly, participating in debates, and delivering on other responsibilities as elected representatives.
The lawmakers who were dropped today did not want to be singled out for comment but many of them said that they have been busy campaigning or helping out with state elections in Bihar and local body or municipal elections in Rajasthan.
The meetings they missed were held between the monsoon and winter sessions of parliament last year.
