Jammu: The BJP today welcomed the Union government's reported nod to build community and individual bunkers along the Line of Control and the International Border in Jammu and Kashmir, saying the party was committed to deliver the promises made to the residents of border areas.
Its state unit spokesman Anil Gupta said the BJP welcomes the government's decision to construct 4,700 community and 19,000 individual bunkers.
A news report today claimed that the Centre has agreed to construct the bunkers for the safety of border residents.
Gupta said the bunkers would be constructed in all five districts in Jammu region close to the IB and the LoC. "District-wise allotment of bunkers will be done based on the population in each district. The project's cost, including for the acquisition of land, will be borne by the central government," he said in a statement.
Gupta said the proposed bunkers will be "underground living units" with cooking and toilet facilities. "Adequate planning for waste disposal and ventilation would be required since the bunkers would include kitchen and toilets because construction of soakage pits in these areas is problematic," he said.
Gupta said the BJP, a coalition partner in the state government, is the "true well-wisher" of the people in border areas and does not believe in "mere rhetoric and lip service".
He questioned the leaderships of the opposition National Conference and the Congress - who ruled the state for more than six decades - as to "what did they do except making false promises to these people and exploiting them for vote bank politics?
