The BJP's Devendra Fadnavis -- the former Chief Minister of Maharashra -- met party chief JP Nadda in Delhi today for a 30-minute strategy session as Shiv Sena rebel Eknath Shinde declared from Guwahati that he and his rebel MLAs are ready to go to Mumbai and meet the Governor. While the BJP has emphatically denied Sena accusations of any role in the rebellion, it has started making moves in preparation of forming a government with the help of the rebels.
Mr Fadnavis's visit came after a BJP core committee meeting on Monday to discuss the state's political situation.
The choice of safe zones for rebels -- first BJP-ruled Gujarat and then BJP-ruled Assam -- has sent out a contradictory signal.
In Assam, several BJP MLAs have reportedly been put in charge of logistics for the Maharashtra MLAs camping there. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was seen in the hotel.
Recently, Mr Shinde had even admitted that he has the support of a big national party, though he stopped short of naming it.
Mr Fadnavis, the former Chief Minister of Maharashtra, had taken oath at a secret ceremony after the 2019 Assembly election, but had to step down after his deputy and NCP leader Ajit Pawar quit.
The Maha Vikas Aghadi, an alliance between Shiv Sena, Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party crafted by Sharad Pawar, came to power next.
Mr Fadnavis has since been spearheading the party's attack against the Shiv Sena-led government in the state.
