Blast in Meghalaya, no casualties

Shillong: Suspected rebels of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) on Tuesday night triggered a blast at a petrol pump in Meghalaya but there were no casualties, police said.

The rebels triggered an improvised explosive device (IED) blast around 9.15 p.m. at the Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) petrol pump near the Williamnagar Civil hospital, police said.

Williamnagar is the district headquarters of East Garo Hills and is around 300 km from Shillong.

"The rebels triggered the blast after the petrol pump closed for the day. No one was injured but a pumping machine was damaged," Inspector General of Police (Operations) G.H.P. Raju told IANS.

A long flexible wire was recovered from the blast site.

A combing operation was launched to arrest the rebels.
