Blog: Report from Leh Ground Zero

Blog: Report from Leh Ground Zero
Leh, Ground Zero: The Leh Airport does not give any indication of the devastation that the sudden cloudburst wrought on the Ladakh capital late on Thursday night. The Army and the Air Force have managed to completely wipe out the slush that the runway was under through the day on Friday.

So, flights landed - commecial as well as military - on Saturday morning bringing with them tourists, journalists like me and of course, the relief team from the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF).

The Air Force brought in two big IL-76s and three AN-32s with relief material, medicines and a medical team.

Several foreigners on my flight were completely unaware of the disaster till they boarded the flight since many of them had come straight from Europe and the US.

The main market is still closed but many tourists, Indians and foreigners, are milling around.

Rescue work is continuing apace at the worst affected areas. Hospitals are chock-a-block with the injured.

A lot of work remains to be done but the effort is already on. The priority right now is to find the 400-odd people declared missing.
