Bodhgaya temple blasts: Delhi Police had warned of a possible Indian Mujahideen attack

New Delhi: Even before investigations begin, there are indications about the possible involvement of banner terror group Indian Mujahideen in today's multiple blasts at the Mahabodhi temple in Bodhgaya in Bihar.

Eight low-intensity explosions shattered the calm at the famous Buddhist shrine early this morning, injuring two people. Two live bombs which were reportedly found near the temple were defused. (Read) | (Pics)

While the Centre has dubbed it a terror attack, it is now emerging that the Special Cell of the Delhi Police had sent an intelligence input last October to Bihar's Director General of Police (DGP) and the Superintendent of Police in Gaya district about a possible strike by the IM.

"We have notified Bihar Police... we have informed them to tighten the security," Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar had said.

The warning came after the Special Cell busted an IM module which was allegedly responsible for the Pune serial blasts in August last year. During interrogation, it was revealed that the group was also planning a fidayeen (suicide) attack at the Mahabodhi temple.

Sources say a meeting was held in Hyderabad last year at the house of Obaid-ur-Rehman, a key accused in the twin blasts in Hyderabad in February this year. The plan was apparently approved by Riyaz Bhatkal, one of the founders of the Indian Mujahideen who is believed to be hiding in Pakistan.

Meanwhile, Junior Home Minister RPN Singh said that no one has claimed responsibility for the explosions, and that an investigation will be carried out to determine who was involved.

Teams from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and National Security Guards (NSG) are on their way to the site of the blasts. Additional security forces have been deployed to guard the temple complex.
