New Delhi:

The ghost of Bofors has returned to haunt the Congress. After Ottavio Quatrocchi, the main accused in the Bofors scam was dropped from the CBI's most wanted list, the BJP on Tuesday trained its guns on the Congress.

After news broke in the Indian Express that the CBI decided to drop its global hunt for Ottavio Quattrocchi, top accused in the scam, the BJP decided to up the ante, saying if it came to power they would investigate the CBI for its collusion with the accused in a number of political cases.

But the Congress hit back, saying millions of dollars for the last 20 years have been spent on the Bofors investigation with no result, including when the NDA was in power. Their claim is that after 2 courts had rejected extradition appeals by India, there was no justification to continue an international alert against Quattrochi, even though he still faces criminal charges in the Bofors case.

As the political crossfire continues, the big test for the CBI will be the court. The case comes up for hearing later this week.
