Mumbai: Mumbai Regional Congress Committee president Sanjay Nirupam today demanded that Union Ministers Smriti Irani and Bandaru Dattatreya be booked under the Atrocities Act in connection with the suicide by Dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula.
"Irani, Dattatreya and right-wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) leaders who prompted Vemula to end his life should be booked under the Atrocities Act," the Congress leader said.
He was speaking at a "condolence" meeting at Azad Maidan in Mumbai, organised by MRCC on the occasion of Mr Vemula's birth anniversary.
The venue displayed a banner saying 'Vemula Jayanti'.
"Vemula had to commit suicide due to the harassment by ABVP and the two ministers," Mr Nirupam said.
