Bots developed by a 17-year-old computer programmer from Tamil Nadu have landed him in trouble after they were used to send bomb threats to several top schools in Bengaluru and Bhopal. The Class 12 student had created the bots for a foreigner for which he received $200 in Bitcoins.
The bots were later used to operate multiple email ids by the unidentified client.
The Madhya Pradesh police will be serving notice to the teen, seeking his help in the investigation.
"We've sent our teams to Tamil Nadu and are serving the teenager notice to help us in investigations. The actual unidentified accused could be a foreign national, who used the Bots hosted by the Tamil Nadu teenager to send the mails to schools in Bhopal and Bengaluru," said Amit Kumar,DCP Crime, Bhopal.
While identical emails were sent to the Bengaluru schools in April, similar emails were sent to eleven prominent schools in Bhopal in May using the bots developed to operate multiple email ids.
"The emails sent to schools in Bhopal turned out to be hoax but it kept entire bomb detection and disposal squads (BDDS) teams busy for hours. Subsequent probe by our teams revealed that the IP address of a Salem resident boy was the genesis of the mails. Our team managed to trace the teenager in two days," he added.
