Srinagar:
Six days after he was drowned while saving tourists after their boat capsized, the body of Kashmir's braveheart Ghulam Mohammad Guru was fished out from the river Jhelum at Chatabal Weir.
The relentless search to retrieve the body of 50-year-old shikarawala ended this afternoon. As the body was handed over to the family, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti saluted Ghulam Mohammad's sacrifice.
"He has shown what Kahsmiriyat is, sacrificed his life to save tourists and their families. I salute this braveheart who has made Kashmir proud," said the Chief Minister after meeting the family. The government, she said, will do everything to help the family.
Six tourists, including two children, were in the boat when it capsized on Wednesday evening. Though Ghulam Mohammad successfully saved the tourists, he drowned while trying to pull out their luggage.
"To save the tourists and their luggage, he sacrificed his life. The message should go to all over world," said Noor Mohammad, a neighbour.
Senior officials of the Tourism department also visited Ghulam Mohammad's family.
His sacrifice, they said, sent a message across the country about how Kashmiris can even sacrifice their lives for the safety and honour of a guest. "Guru has shown us what Kashmiryat is and what Atithi Devo Bhava actually means," an official said.
