Madurai:
The Election Commission has ordered a probe into allegations of the DMK distributing money to woo voters in its VVIP constituency of Madurai where Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi's son M K Azhagirin is contesting.
On Sunday morning, party workers allegedly went around giving money to voters right at their doorsteps. The Left had complained about the incident.
"They think they can make the whole of Tamil Nadu as Thirumangalam with their money power. But with people's power we will overcome it," CPM general secretary Prakash Karat said.
Even during the recent Tirumangalam by-poll campaign led by Azhagiri, the party was accused of bribing voters. The then Election Commissioner N Gopalsami had even said the situation was worse than Bihar.
And just a few days ago, the EC directed the Tamil Nadu government to withdraw a reduction in bus fare aimed at wooing voters.
Many say although the Election Commission's action creates ripples initially, ultimately it ends up becoming a mute spectator to all malpractices only emboldening poll violators.
