Brigadier with wheelchair makes history with promotion

New Delhi: The Army will create history soon by promoting a wheelchair-bound brigadier to the rank of Major General.

In a fierce battle in Kashmir's Anantnag in 1994, a group of nine terrorists held fourteen women hostage. Fighting them was a young officer, Colonel Razdan, who finally after 24 hours rescued the hostages.

The victory came with a heavy price. Colonel Razdan was shot in the stomach, and he spent a year in the hospital but could never walk again.

"I was taught that the life of an Army officer is one of sacrifice," said Colonel Razdan.

But the wheel chair did not deter this incredible officer. He continued to work, doing all he can for his country.

"If God shuts one door, he opens another," he added.
"I do feel proud. He is like Bhagat Singh," said Manju Razdan, Brigadier Razdan's wife.

Colonel Razdan was awarded the Kirti Chakra, and now he becomes the officer in a wheelchair to be promoted to the rank of major general.

It maybe a cliché, but it's true - where there's a will, there's a way.
