Srinagar: A Border Security Force or BSF jawan posted for security outside Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's residence in Srinagar opened fire suddenly this morning, but has injured no one.

Personnel of the special security group or SSG, which provides security to Mr Abdullah, immediately overpowered the jawan and he was handed over to the police.

Mr Abdullah tweeted, "Not withstanding today's incident with the BSF jawan stationed at my residence in Srinagar today I have full confidence in my security team."

The police said they had questioned the man, who, they said, seemed to be "mentally disturbed." He has been detained by the police.

People who live in the high-security Gupkar area where the Chief Minster's residence is located, said they woke up to the sound of gunshots. They said they thought it was a militant attack.
