Attari:
Rockets were fired from the Pakistani side on Friday night. It landed close to two villages inside Punjab, forcing the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel to retaliate with machine gun and mortar fire.
Fortunately, there was no damage, but what's worrying India is that this is the second such incident in two months.
"We heard a loud explosion. I got up and opened the door. When I stepped out I saw some fireworks at a distance in Modahi village," one of the villagers said.
"It was a huge explosion. We couldn't understand what it was. The entire village got alarmed," another villager said.
At India's border with Pakistan in Attari, BSF troopers responded with gunfire in a late night confrontation with Pakistani rangers. Finally a flag meeting was called at 1 am and India lodged a strong protest.
"At 10 pm last night troops at BOP Pul kanjri saw flashes and firing from Pakistan territory. After a short while we got reports that two rockets have landed in two villages, Modhey and Dhanua Khuerd about two km inside the Indian territory. They fell in an open area and there are no reports of damage or injuries," said Himmat Singh, IG, BSF.
BSF troops retaliated quite strongly after which there has been no firing from across the border. India is taking Friday night's incident very seriously, but farmers in these border villages say they've weathered similar attacks in the last two months.
"A month back there were bombs like this; there were two bombs that time. Last night there were four bombs around 10 pm. These bombs are very dangerous, people were scared the whole night," said a villager.
Pakistan Rangers say they know nothing about the attacks, but India isn't taking any chances. The BSF troops have been placed on alert all along the international border.
