The BSF soldier injured in firing by Pakistani rangers has been taken to Jammu city for treatment
Jammu:
Four days after the Ufa handshake between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif, the first civilian killing has taken place at the Indo-Pak border.
42-year-old Poli Devi died in Pakistani shelling in the Akhnoor sector in Jammu today.
The offensive came ahead of PM Modi's visit to Jammu on Friday to attend the centenary celebrations of former state Finance Minister Girdhari Lal Dogra.
Five border outposts of the Border Security Forces (BSF) were targeted by Pakistani Rangers; four civilians and two BSF personnel were injured.
Pakistan fired 82 mm long range mortars targeting Indian villages, forcing residents to flee.
The firing which started this morning, went on for three hours. Then after a lull for a couple of hours, Pakistan resumed shelling. Three bombs landed inside a BSF border outpost.
"Big shells landed in our house, many causalities have taken place in our village, and many people have go to safer places, our education has got disturbed due to this", said a student, Ritu.
"Several shells landed in our village in the morning, we can't go out into the fields, we can't work, there is lot of fear", said Rita Devi, a border resident.
The Sub District Magistrate of Akhnoor, Rakesh Kumar, said, "If firing intensifies, we have made teams to shift the people from border areas to safer places."
There have been six ceasefire violations by Pakistan along the Line of Control and the International Border in the last one week.
Sources say India doesn't want to pre-judge the outcome of the meeting of the PMs and believes Nawaz Sharif's government is under tremendous pressure. At the moment, the thinking is to wait and watch.
All eyes are now on when talks will take place between the BSF and Pakistani Rangers and the Director General Military Operations of the two countries.
