BSP Lawmakers Demand Gen VK Singh Leave Rajya Sabha Over 'Dog' Remark

BSP Lawmakers Demand Gen VK Singh Leave Rajya Sabha Over 'Dog' Remark

Gen VK Singh had made the allegedly insensitive remarks in October.

New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for 10 minutes this afternoon with Bahujan Samaj Party lawmakers disrupting proceedings objecting to Union minister and former Army chief VK Singh's presence in the House.

The BSP MPs wanted Gen Singh to leave the House for his allegedly insensitive remarks on the death of two Dalit children in Haryana's Faribadabad in October. BSP Leader in the Rajya Sabha, Satish Chandra Mishra, requested Deputy Chairman Prof PJ Kurien to ask Gen Singh to leave the house "for insulting Dalits."

BSP members rushed to the well of the house shouting "wapas jao (go back)!" with Congress MPs supporting them from their seats, forcing an adjournment. After the proceedings resumed, Mr Mishra said the party would suspend their protest temporarily to allow Home Minister Rajnath Singh to speak on the situation in rain-hit Tamil Nadu.

Gen Singh's alleged remarks have continued to trouble his party and the prime minister.

Speaking on the discussion on incidents of perceived intolerance in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Congress vice president had hit out at PM Modi over the minister's remarks. He had alleged Gen Singh had compared two Dalit children, who were burnt to death in Faridabad in October, to dogs. "Gen VK Singh likened Dalit children to dogs but the PM allows him to continue as minister as if nothing happened," he had said.
