Kolkata:
For 19 days Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee did not say a word on Left losing the polls in West Bengal. Today, the former Chief Minister of West Bengal finally broke his silence. Addressing a rally in Kolkata, Mr Bhattacharjee attacked the Congress-Trinamool combine for rising prices and an imminent fuel price hike.
"Even if we have lost in the elections, don't forget a huge number of people in Bengal have voted for the Left. In villages and towns, the red flag is flying. You have to protect the dignity of the red flag," said Mr Bhattacharjee.
Crowds braved the rain to hear the CPM leader speak. His immediate target was the rising prices under the UPA government of which the Trinamool is a member.
"The Centre has raised the price of petrol eight times. Next month, they will raise it again. Not only petrol, the price of diesel, gas and kerosene will also go up. Where is this government going?" Mr Bhattacharjee questioned.
Today's rally is not a new line of attack. However, the big question is, in the changed political environment, will old tactics work or will the Left have to reinvent itself to take on the Trinamool.
