Buddhadeb has not quit, says CPM

Kolkata: The CPI(M) Politburo, the party's highest decision-making body, met in New Delhi today to discuss the party's drubbing in the recent West Bengal elections and the closer defeat in Kerala.

In West Bengal, the party that ruled for 34 continuous years, faced such a rout at the hands of Mamata Banerjee, that it has come down to third place in the state assembly. Nearly all its ministers, including former Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee lost the elections.

But party general secretary Prakash Karat said it was too early to write the epitaph of the Left. He also rubbished reports that Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was quitting the Politburo. There was much speculation earlier in the day as Mr Bhattacharjee did not attend the meeting that analysed the poll results.

"Nobody has resigned or even offered to resign, I am surprised to see that one newspaper in West Bengal seems to have some information which our party does not have...Yes, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee himself has not attended this meeting today, he informed me yesterday that he will not be able to attend," Mr Karat said.

Mr Karat said the Mr Bhattachajee had to stay on in Bengal in "light of serious situation developing there."
