Building collapses in Faridabad, 6 killed

Faridabad: At least six persons were killed and three injured while some others remained trapped under debris when a three-storey shopping complex collapsed on Wednesday afternoon in this satellite township of the national capital.

The 'City Centre' collapsed at around 12.45 pm and six persons were killed in the incident, Deputy Commissioner Praveen Kumar told PTI. The complex is located in New Industrial Township (NIT) Market No. 1.

Sources said repair work was going on in the top floor of the building and heavy machines were installed there.

Asked whether the reason for the collapse was the installation of a heavy generator on top of the building, Kumar said, "We are investigating the matter. The generator could be a reason but we are not sure now."

According to Kumar, two people who were killed in the incident were working in the shopping complex. The building is owned by one Gurinder Singh Ahuja.

The debris clearance operations at the collapse site are on.

A large number of people gathered at the spot as efforts were on to clear the debris.

Ten cranes were working at the spot to assist authorities in the rescue operations. Fire brigade and ambulance were also present.
