Two elderly women were killed after being run over by a car driven allegedly by a man who tried to molest a woman from their family in Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr. Two others were injured in the hit-and-run on Monday night.
In CCTV footage, the car is seen coming in at high speed; it then hits the two women. Soon, a group of people gather around the women as the car sped away.
The police, which had initially filed a case of accident, said that they were investigating allegations by the victims' family that a 30-year-old upper caste man ran over the women - who are Dalits - after his failed attempt to molest the 22-year-old woman from their family.
In a video recorded by a local resident, the 22-year-old woman alleges how the accused, belonging to a neighbouring village, had misbehaved with her. She also alleges that the man had threatened her just minutes before he allegedly ran over her family members with his car.
"The man came from behind and told me to sit in his car. He threatened us, saying he will come back. He did come back in a speeding vehicle and hit us. There was only one man in the car. I will identify him," the woman said.
Senior police officer Atul Shrivastava said the police were initially told that it was a truck accident. "We filed a case. But now the family has given a written complaint that a molestation attempt led to the incident. We have included that in the FIR (First Information Report) and are trying to arrest the accused," Mr Shrivastava said.
Another senior police officer in Bulandshahr, N Kolanchi, said the accused has been arrested. "The woman in her statement said she was asked to sit in the car and the accused ran over them after she refused. The accused, however, said the women suddenly came in front of him while he was driving. This has been captured in CCTV camera. He claimed he didn't try to molest the woman," Mr Kolanchi told NDTV.
