Unnao, Uttar Pradesh: A man was burnt to death allegedly for complaining against the molestation of his daughter to the police in Unnao, just 50 km from Uttar Pradesh's capital Lucknow.
Ram Sevak, a farmer, was set on fire on Sunday evening, allegedly by Pappu, Kalicharan and Fatte, locals belonging to the same village. The incident took place behind Mr Sevak's house under a mango tree on July 19. When NDTV visited the site, burnt clothing allegedly belonging to Mr Sevak could be seen lying around the spot. He died in hospital today in Kanpur.
Mr Sevak's wife Asha has blamed the police for not acting on their complaints and protecting her husband. "We went to the DIG and IG, but no action was taken by the police. If police would have taken any action than my husband would not have suffered this," she told reporters.
According to Mr Sevak's daughter, Pooja, trouble started on April 24 when their buffalo entered the fields of Mr Kailash, a retired bank manager. Mr Kailash's sons, Kalicharan and Pappu beat up Mr Sevak and his wife, after which Mr Sevak filed a complaint with the local police. This led to acrimony between the two sides.
Ms Pooja told NDTV, "The night of July 8, I had gone to the fields with my mother, He (Pappu) came and held my hand. They refused to let me go till my mother shouted for help, after which they ran away... incidents like this have happened earlier, but police took no action."
The state's ruling Samajwadi Party faced political attacks over the incident today.
BJP lawmaker, Sakshi Maharaj said, "This is shameful, buffaloes and goats in UP have police protection, but not people. The law and order situation is very bad not only in Unnao but in the whole region."
Local police has registered a case of attempt to murder against Pappu, Kalicharan and Fatte and are awaiting the post mortem report. "We have got a complaint and we have given it for investigation," said senior police officer Ram Kishan Yadav.
The accused have been absconding since the incident.
