Chandigarh: Two men died today after being hit by private buses that belonged to companies allegedly owned by Punjab's ruling Akali Dal leaders -- including Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.

A bus owned Dabwali Transport, allegedly owned by Mr Badal, crushed a man at a village in Muktsar, sources said.

The man, identified as Roshan Lal, was employed at a local brick kiln. Angry relatives staged protests outside the local police station. They also alleged that the police had tried to pressurise them for compromise.

Later, the bus was impounded and a police case was lodged against the driver.

In the afternoon, a bus belonging to New Deep Transport Company - allegedly owned by senior Akali leader Dimpy Dhillon -- crushed a cyclist in Bathinda.

The man, 55-year-old Ramhit, worked at a local factory of the National Fertilizer Limited, sources said. While police have impounded the bus, its driver is still absconding. Eyewitnesses said the bus was traveling at high speed.

Private buses owned by Akali leaders have been in news since May last year, when a teenage girl was molested and thrown from a moving bus of Orbit aviation, a company owned by Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal, leading to statewide protests against the Badal government.
