The Jangipur Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal goes to the polls today and will determine the fortunes of the son of India's President. Abhijit Mukherjee who is contesting on a Congress ticket.
The by-poll was necessitated due to resignation by Pranab Mukjerjee who contested the presidential election.
Jangipur had sent Pranab Mukherjee to Parliament in 2004 and 09. No longer allies the Congress and the Trinamool should have been at loggerheads here, but Mamata Banerjee did not field a candidate out of respect, they say, for Pranab babu.
Mr Abhijit is pitted against Muzaffar Hussain (CPI-M) and Sudhangshu Biswas (BJP) in a multi-corner contest in the border district of Murshidabad district which has a sizeable minority population.
Mr Abhijit has his hands full. Pranab Mukherjee had won the seat in 2009 with a margin of one lakh 28 thousands votes. But this is the first poll after the UPA's big bang reforms and the Congress is not expecting a smooth sail.
