Kanhaiya Kumar has accused Smriti Irani of abetting the suicide of Dalit scholar Rohit Vemula.
New Delhi:
Jawaharlal Nehru University student leader Kanhaiyar Kumar today welcomed the exit of Smriti Irani from the Human Resource Development Ministry but said this was no "punishment" for the suicide of Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula.
After Ms Irani was transferred to the Textiles Ministry, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union President said justice had not been served to Mr Vemula, who committed suicide in Hyderabad.
Mr Vemula was a PhD student at the University of Hyderabad who committed suicide on January 17, triggering widespread protests against Ms Irani and Mr Dattatreya who were blamed for the suicide.
Five Dalit students, including Vemula, were suspended in September following a clash with a leader of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad or ABVP.

He added that another minister, Bandaru Dattatreya, must be jailed for allegedly harassing Mr Vemula, leading to his suicide.#JusticeForRohith is still awaited. #CabinetReshuffle is not punishment. #ByeByeSmrity n Dattatreya should be from cabinet to jail#Azadi
