The Tura Lok Sabha seat and the Anantnag Assembly constituency which fell vacant following the demise of former Speaker PA Sangma and the then Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed respectively will witness bypolls in May.
The Election Commission today announced bypolls to one Lok Sabha and nine Assembly seats which would be held on May 16.
National People's Party chief Sangma had died in New Delhi on March 4 following a massive heart attack.
PDP leader Sayeed had died in harness as the chief minister on January 7 at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi where he was undergoing treatment for pneumonia.
The other Assembly seats for which bypolls have been announced are Kanubari in Arunachal Pradesh, Godda and Panki in Jharkhand, Talala in Gujarat, Jangipur and Bilari in Uttar Pradesh, Ghoradongari in Madhya Pradesh and Palair in Telengana.
The notification for the bypolls will be issued on April 22, while counting will take place on May 19 -- along with counting of votes in West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry, which are having Assembly polls.
