New Delhi:
A cabinet committee will meet today to decide the schedule of the budget session, during which, besides the budget, the government is keen to pass the flagship Goods and Services Tax bill.
Sources said the government will consult the political parties from five poll-bound states to decide on the session schedule.
Usually, the Budget session begins in the third week of February and is over by early May. There is a recess in between, when the budgetary demands for grants are discussed in the committees.
But, the process of the assembly elections will begin in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry -- where the tenure of the assemblies is set to end in May-June -- in the middle of the session if the usual schedule is followed.
Sources said Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu will take the views of the leaders of parties including Congress, Trinamool Congress, Left, AGP, AIADMK and DMK, which have stakes in these states.
The Cabinet Committee of Parliamentary Affairs, headed by Home Minister Rajnath Singh, will take the final call on the duration and schedule of the session, the focus of which will be on the Railway and the General budgets.
