Cabinet reshuffle: Punjab gets powerful in rejig

New Delhi: Though the Congress is not the ruling party in Punjab, the state earned powerful representation in the latest reshuffle in the union cabinet on Sunday.

Chandigarh MP Pawan Kumar Bansal is the new Railway minister. The crucial portfolio, which had eluded the Congress for many years, is back with the party now.

Mr Bansal was, till now, the union minister for parliamentary affairs.

Ludhiana MP and Congress spokesman Manish Tewari is the new minister of state (independent charge) for information and broadcasting.

Another Punjab MP, Ambika Soni, who was the cabinet minister for I and B till now, resigned from the post on Saturday.

Ashwani Kumar, who is from Gurdaspur district of Punjab, is the new union law minister. Minister of state for science and technology so far, he has been elevated to the cabinet rank.

Salman Khurshid was the law minister till now. He has been made the external affairs minister.

Patiala MP Preneet Kaur, the wife of former Punjab chief minister and state Congress chief Amarinder Singh, continues to be the minister of state for external affairs.

From neighbouring Haryana, Kumari Selja is the only person in the union cabinet.
