The Maharashtra government had last week been refused permission by the High Court to stage the summit at the landmark beach
Mumbai:
Whether a huge event to draw foreign investors can be held on Mumbai's famous Chowpatty Beach will be decided by the Supreme Court tomorrow.
The investor summit, scheduled to launch on February 13 for six days, will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Maharashtra government had last week been refused permission by the High Court to stage the summit at the landmark beach. Though the government pointed to the attendance of VIPs and the "heads of state of at least six nations", the High Court said that environmental and other guidelines developed in 2005 cannot permit the investor summit to be inaugurated on the beach.
The 'Make in India' event is expected to draw 10,000 people from 56 countries for the state government's pitching of Mumbai as a rich cultural center loaded with financial opportunities. Nitin Desai, a top Bollywood art director known for his lavish sets, has been hired for the event, which is meant to include an elaborate fireworks display at night. "It will be a carnival... it will be open to all. We want the whole city to come together for celebrating Mumbai," said Apoorva Chandra, a top state bureaucrat in the Industries ministry, to the Indian Express.
