Arrested JNU student Kanhaiya Kumar was attacked at the Patiala House court
New Delhi:
Hours before a protest march by its students, the Jawaharlal Nehru University or JNU appealed to them to "reconsider" on account of their safety.
In a written appeal, the university said: "While we appreciate your right to protests, we are apprehensive of your safety outside campus."
JNU has also written to the police and the home ministry requesting adequate security for its students.
Students and some faculty members plan to take out a march in the heart of Delhi today in support of Kanhaiya Kumar, the student leader arrested on sedition charges and sent to jail till March 2.
This week, supporters of the arrested student were attacked twice at a Delhi court where his case was being heard. An unruly group of lawyers is common to both the attacks.
On Wednesday, the lawyers barged into the Patiala House court complex before Mr Kumar's hearing, shouted slogans, attacked his supporters and also heckled a team of lawyers sent by the Supreme Court to assess the ground situation.
When Mr Kumar was being escorted to the hearing by policemen, he was also assaulted.
"We are appealing to students to reconsider the march in the light of their safety," JNU Registrar Professor Bupinder Zutshi told NDTV.
He was arrested on Friday for allegedly making anti-national statements at an event on campus on February 9 to mark the anniversary of the execution of terrorist Afzal Guru.
A day later, policemen swooped in on the campus to search for students who allegedly participated in the event. They arrested Mr Kumar during that search. JNU Vice Chancellor Jagadesh Kumar was accused of allowing the police a free run on the campus.
"We will not allow the police to enter the university without permission," Professor Zutshi asserted.
