Captain Amarinder Singh to Take Over as Punjab Congress Chief at Bathinda Rally

Amarinder Singh will take over the charge at a public rally in Bathinda, the date for which has not been announced yet.

Chandigarh: Former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh will take over as the chief of the Congress' Punjab unit at a public rally in Bathinda.

This was decided by senior party leaders who met Mr Singh today in New Delhi, a day after the decision was made. Mr Singh also met Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi.

"I will take over as the PCC President at a public rally in Bathinda. The date of the rally will be announced soon," he said, after a meeting with senior party leaders in New Delhi.

Punjab's ruling Shiromani Akali Dal in a show of strength along with its ally the BJP had recently held a rally in Bathinda following massive protests by the Congress and Sikh groups over incidents of desecration of the 'Guru Granth Sahib'. The BJP had also blamed the Congress for disrupting the law and order in the state.

Referring to the BJP rally, Mr Singh said, "We will hold a public rally at the same venue and it will be bigger than that of yours,"

Before taking the charge, Mr Singh will visit Amritsar and pay obeisance at the Golden Temple, Durgiana Mandir and Swami Ramtirath there on Wednesday. He is also likely to meet party president Sonia Gandhi in a few days.

Captain Amarinder Singh has replaced Pratap Singh Bajwa as the state party president after months of speculation over change in state's leadership. Former Union Minister Ambika Soni was also made the head of the Campaign Committee in a major reshuffle of the party's state unit ahead of the 2017 Assembly polls.
