Cash-for-votes scam: Amar Singh blames BJP
New Delhi: Former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh, who is in jail for the cash-for-votes scam, has now blamed the BJP. Noted lawyer Ram Jethmalani, arguing for Amar Singh's bail, has said in the court that the BJP arranged for cash that the MPs brought in Parliament.

Speaking to reporters Mr Jethmalani said, "One of the accused (BJP MPs) has sent a certificate to this effect in his bail plea. This is what he has said."  Speaking for his client he added, "It is not mentioned in the chargesheet that he (Singh) has given the money.''

Reacting to Mr Jethmalani's claims, BJP leader Arun Jaitley said, ''Well this is the plea of the accused, he (Mr Jethmalani) is only a lawyer, whatever plea a lawyer takes up in court however false it may be, we normally don't comment on it because it is a matter pending in court.''

Earlier today the court was hearing Mr Singh's interim bail plea; it has now reserved the order till Tuesday.

The former Samajwadi Party leader has been in Tihar jail for almost two weeks now after he was arrested by CBI in connection with the in cash-for-votes scam case.

Mr Singh has sought bail on health grounds. The jail authorities last Friday submitted a medical record of the Rajya Sabha MP saying his medical condition was stable.

Mr Singh was arrested earlier this week for allegedly bribing three BJP MPs to support the government during a trust vote in July 2008.

Mr Singh had a kidney transplant last year; he says being in Tihar Jail makes him vulnerable to infection. The judge hearing his case was not satisfied with the documents submitted earlier this week by his lawyers, and had asked for complete medical records.

The politician has been kept in Ward No 4 of Jail No 3 which has 20 cells each measuring 22x8 feet. Each cell has its own separate toilet and bathroom.
