Jhalawar: Kanwar Lal Meena, a BJP lawmaker from Rajasthan, has been issued a notice by his party after a video purportedly showed him attacking members of a rights group founded by noted activists Aruna Roy and Nikhil Dey.

Mr Meena, the legislator from Alkera, has denied the allegation that he and a group of over 40 people attacked members of the Soochna Evam Rozgar Manch, when they were conducting an awareness drive on government accountability in Jhalawar. The party has asked him to explain his stand within seven days.

The video shows Mr Meena, dressed in an orange shirt, leading the mob that attacks social activists.

A stick in hand, he is seen going around damaging cars and attacking Shankar Singh, one of the activists of the Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan, the group that led the RTI movement in Rajasthan and worked for years to strengthen grassroots democracy.

The activists have claimed the incident left at least 12 people injured and the police have registered a case.

A senior police officer said they had detained four persons and investigations are on. The incident happened in the constituency of Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje's son Dushyant Singh.

Describing the attack as "pre-planned", Nikhil Dey said, "We were not critical of the government, we were just trying to work towards good governance. If even that cannot be talked about then it is a very sad commentary on democratic space."

Activists who were part of the drive had also alleged that the police deployed at the spot stood as mute spectators and watched the sequence of events.
