Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Police was left red faced on Wednesday by the alleged action of a junior colleague in Shahjahanpur. Shailendra Shukla, a constable in his 30s, with the Nigohi police station, was purportedly caught on camera showering currency notes on a dancer at a fairground.
Apparently, Mr Shukla had gatecrashed the programme, which was in progress at the city's Ramlila Grounds on Monday evening. Eyewitnesses said he was armed and inebriated at the time.
According to some reports, he climbed up on the stage, brandished his gun around and also jived with the dancer.
In the video though - a grainy cellphone footage - a man, purported to be the officer, could be seen showing off his gun to a crowd backstage, loading it and then tucking it into his belt.
Later, he was on stage, his back to the camera, standing close to the dancing woman, holding a wad of currency notes. The music was Tamanche pe disco - a popular number from the Bollywood movie Bullett Raja. The dancing woman could be seen smiling as he started showering the notes on her.
Apparently, he had thrown around Rs 30,000.
Mr Shukla was suspended forthwith.
Rakesh Chandra Sahu, the Superintendent of Police, Shahjahanpur, said the matter was under investigation.
"This is a grave violation of the service code and goes against the dignity of police. The matter will be investigated and strong action will be taken," Mr Sahu said.
