Mumbai:
The CBI is worried that Niranjan and Surendra Hiranandani, brothers and co-owners of the Hiranandani Group, may try to leave the country. They're accused of defaulting on Rs 9.36 crore due as provident fund for their employees for 2003-2004. Recently, they've ignored summons to appear in court.
Like their company, the brothers are usually headquartered in Mumbai. "We do not know where they are, hence "look-out" circulars have been issued against them in all the airports across the nation," CBI DIG Praveen Salunkhe told PTI.
The CBI lodged a case against them, accusing them of a provident fund scam, in March 2008.
The Hiranandanis have also been at the centre of another controversy. The company received 230 acres of government land in Powai at throw-away prices to build affordable housing for low-income groups. Instead, it created and sold mammoth luxury pads. For this, the government decided to fine them Rs 200 crore, considered a pittance given the value of the land.
