New Delhi:
In a major blow to the Central Bureau of Investigation or CBI, a senior official of the agency has been arrested by its own vigilance unit for soliciting a bribe.
Vivek Dutt was part of the ongoing investigation in the highly sensitive and contentious coal scam, but the CBI has clarified that the bribe was not related to this case. CBI sources say that Mr Dutt had demanded Rs 7 lakh to act as a mediator in a financial dispute between two private parties. An inspector, who collected the money on Mr Dutt's behalf, has also been arrested.
This however could have some ramifications for the coal investigation. Earlier this month, the Supreme Court had said that no officer investigating the case could be discharged of their duties till the probe is complete.
The "coal-gate" scandal revolves around allegations that the UPA government adopted a flawed policy in allotting coal fields to private firms.
