Lucknow:
The Samajwadi Party today alleged that the UPA government was using the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to corner its chief Mulayam Singh Yadav for not supporting the bill on quotas in job promotions.
"A conspiracy is on to trap the SP chief in the CBI net for not supporting FDI and a bill on quota in promotions," party spokesman Rajendra Chowdhury said. "Come what may, the SP will not change its stand."
The Congress refuted the charge, saying the CBI is an independent body and the government doesn't interfere in its affairs. "The CBI performs its duties on its own," Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi said in New Delhi.
After days of continuous disruption and unruly scenes, the Rajya Sabha is set to vote on the quota in job promotions bill on Monday.
Mr Alvi said the Congress will issue a whip to its members in the Rajya Sabha to support the bill. "After much thought we are bringing the bill and hope that we will be able to get it cleared," he said.
The UPA government does not have a majority in the Rajya Sabha. A Constitutional amendment bill requires two-thirds majority.
