CBI projecting me as a dangerous man: Balwa

CBI projecting me as a dangerous man: Balwa
New Delhi: Swan Telecom promoter Shahid Usman Balwa, accused in 2G spectrum allocation scam, today told a Delhi court that CBI has created a "sensational falsehood" in the case and was projecting him as a "dangerous" man.

"The CBI wants this court to believe that these (accused) are dangerous people who have committed serious offence. The agency is trying to project him as a dangerous man," Balwa's counsel Majid Memon submitted before Special CBI Judge O P Saini.

Memon, who was arguing on the bail plea of Balwa, said the CBI should satisfy the court whether Balwa's physical presence in the custody has helped agency in its investigation into the case.

"There must be a compelling reason to keep me (Balwa) behind bars. Investigation vis-a-vis my custodial interrogation is over after filing of the chargesheet against me on April 2," Memon said.

He said the CBI must back its apprehensions that Balwa could tamper with the evidence or could win over the witnesses.

"What is the base for the apprehensions by the CBI that evidence could be tampered or witnesses could be influenced by Balwa. Apprehensions must have some base...A sensational falsehood has been created by the CBI," Memon said.

"This case is blown out of proportion due to some political or other reasons which I do not want to discuss now," he said.

Memon told the judge that his client is ready to abide by any condition imposed by the court if he is granted bail.
