CBI says Amit Shah is not cooperating

Ahmedabad: Amit Shah, the most trusted aide of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, will face a second round of grilling by CBI officials today in jail.

At the questioning at Ahmedabad jail which lasted 6 hours yesterday, the CBI  asked former Gujarat minister Amit Shah 37 questions, all pertaining to the manner in which Sohrabuddin Sheikh and his wife, Kauser, were killed. The CBI says Shah did not cooperate during interrogation and has denied any knowledge or involvement in the Sohrabuddin case.

Shah was arrested by the CBI over the weekend for murder. He resigned last week as Minister of State for Home in Gujarat.

CBI  has also asked former Gujarat Director General of Police PC Pande to appear before it on August 11. Pande has not been named in the chrageheet but was the DGP when the incident took place.

Sohrabuddin and Kauser were taken into illegal custody by senior Gujarat policemen in November 2005 and killed. The police claimed at the time that Sohrabuddin was shot while he was on his way to assassinate the chief minister, Narendra Modi. In 2007, the government admitted that Sohrabuddin had been murdered in a fake encounter.

What the CBI is investigating now is why Sohrabuddin was killed by senior policemen, some of whom are in jail now. Amit Shah is alleged to have asked first for Sohrabuddin's death, and then Kauser's.

CHARGES AGAINST AMIT SHAH

The chargesheet against the former minister states that Sohrabuddin who frequently blackmailed marble traders in Rajasthan had annoyed politically-connected businessmen.  They approached politicians in Rajasthan who alerted the Rajasthan Police to Sohrabuddin.  They, in turn, asked the Gujarat Police for help.  Shah decided that Sohraubddin should be eliminated and put DG Vanzara and Abhay Chudasama, senior policemen, in charge.

Sohrabuddin and Kauser were kidnapped from a bus in 2005 and taken to a farmhouse.  Sohrabuddin was shot first, Kauser a few days later.

The ex-minister also allegedly instructed the police to get rid of Kauser's corpse. So her body was packed in a plastic bag with hay.  Diesel was poured on it. Then Vanzara set it on fire. Her ashes and bones were reportedly thrown into the Narmada.
