Patna:
The Bihar government has asked the CBI to investigate the murder of Brahmeshwar Singh who headed Bihar's dreaded upper caste militia, the Ranvir Sena.
Mr Singh, known popularly as Mukhiya, was shot dead in his village in the Bhojpur district last week by unidentified people. His death provoked violence in the area.
The Sena was notorious for a spate of massacres of Dalits in Bihar in the 80s and 90s. Its leaders said they sought revenge for the killing of upper caste landlords and farm-owners who were targeted by the Naxal insurgency in the state. The militia was banned in 1995.
Mr Singh had been released on bail in 2011.
