The Bengal government's request for the country's premier investigating agency, the CBI, to handle the case of the elderly nun who was raped at the convent where she lived near Kolkata has been rejected, according to the Press Trust of India.
Two men have been arrested in the last 48 hours for the crime that incited protests across India. Both are allegedly citizens of Bangladesh. While one was found in South Mumbai and was allegedly among the group that vandalized the convent earlier this month, the other suspect was arrested in Bengal yesterday and charged by the police with harabouring the attackers.
The 72-year-old nun needed surgery after she was attacked when a gang of robbers broke into the convent school.
Police identified four of the six robbers through CCTV footage.
But the first arrest was made only on Wednesday and authorities in Kolkata had faced criticism over the pace of progress in the investigation.
Police have launched a gang-rape inquiry, although officers said only one person sexually assaulted the nun.
