Madumalai (Tamil Nadu):
As Tamil Nadu celebrates Maattu Pongal today, a day dedicated to the cattle, it's a day of thanksgiving at Madhumalai Sanctury where elephants are at the center of celebrations.
Sixteen of these elephants feasted on the Pongal (riceballs) and the season's other delicacies. And, it is also a special year for them.
"We express our happiness to elephants... this year it's important as elephant has been declared as a heritage animal," said Dr Rajeev Srivastava, field director of Madhumalai Tiger Reserve.
Given our lifestyle and busy schedules, Pongal celebrations have been restricted within the city limits for many. However, this jungle experience was a delight as there was some live entertainment for these jungle giants who shared the dance floor with tourists and elephant lovers.
