Ahmedabad: Retired Gujarat police officer DG Vanzara - an accused in several encounter cases -- triggered a fresh controversy after celebratory shots were fired during his rally in Saurashtra's Gondal town on Sunday.
The controversial former police officer, a key accused in the alleged fake encounters of Ishrat Jahan, Sohrabuddin Sheikh and Tulsi Prajapati, was in Gondal to take part in the rally organised by his supporters to felicitate him.
Mr Vanzara was in an open jeep with his 200 odd supporters during the rally. Two of his supporters, who were with him in the jeep during the rally, fired two rounds in the air even as local policemen looked on.
A video clip of the incident, which immediately went viral on social media platforms, purportedly showed some persons firing in the air as the rally passed through a busy road.
After the video went viral, the Gondal Police has launched a probe into the incident.
"After we got to know about the incident, I ordered an inquiry into it and asked police officials in Gondal town to probe the matter," Rajkot Superintendent of Police Antrip Sood said.
This is not the first time Mr Vanzara has landed in a controversy. Earlier in June, the former police officer offered the Sadar Patel statue a garland containing a pen and a toy gun in Surat.
Mr Vanzara who is out on bail was allowed by a Mumbai court to enter Gujarat in April. After his arrival he has been moving across the state attending programmes organised by his supporters.
