This time, in the middle of his negotiations with the government, Mr Patel had decided to hold the rally that had been put on freeze.
Residents of some Patel-dominated villages had withdrawn their deposits from the bank and banned the entry of political leaders.
The wealthy and influential Patel community had been agitating for quota in education and government jobs - a demand that the Anandiben Patel government had turned down.
Internet services on cellphone in parts of Gujarat - which was suspended on Saturday morning with the detention of Patel leader Hardik Patel -- was resumed in most cities, including Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Vadodara and Surat, by Sunday evening.
Mr Patel - one of the leaders of the Patel community which is demanding reservation in jobs and education -- was detained in Surat, where he tried to hold a protest rally. Later, he was formally arrested on charge of defying prohibitory orders, and then released on bail.
The government suspended the mobile internet services after reports that his arrest had triggered sporadic incidents of violence and protests.
