Kolkata:
A three-member central team arrived at the West Bengal state secretariat Writers Buildings on Tuesday morning. After a 90 minute meeting with the state's top bureaucratic brass, a decision was taken by the team not to step out of Kolkata on Wednesday.
"As of this evening at least, the team has expressed no wish to go to the districts," said AM Chakrabarti, Chief Secretary.
This is not going to please Trinamool which wanted the team to visit Khanakul where a supporter was killed in a recent clash with CPM. But the Left demanded that if the team visited Khanakul, it would also have to visit Lalgarh where CPM supporters were being killed daily by Maoists, backed, the CPM alleges, by Trinamool.
"The central government is aware of the kind of political conspiracy that is happening in the state, what is the programme of the Maoists and how it is being implemented and how Trinamool Congress is aiding them," said Md Salim, CPM leader.
A Left Front delegation submitted a memorandum to the central team today. The Trinamool will meet it on Wednesday. The Congress will send its points directly to the home minister in Delhi.
After the storm of protest in Parliament, Chidambaram had said the central team's visit would be non-confrontational and that it would seek to assist the state government in maintaining law and order.
Chidambaram's team has kept his word in letter and spirit but may not succeed in keeping his alliance partner in good humour.
