Chandigarh Borders Sealed to Keep Rampal Followers Out

Police and paramilitary personnel seal the borders of Chandigarh.

New Delhi: Chandigarh's borders with Panchkula and Mohali have been sealed to prevent the city being overrun by followers of Rampal. The controversial head of Rohtak's Satlok Ashram, who is an undertrial in a murder case, is facing arrest after the Punjab and Haryana High Court ordered on November 5 that a non-bailable arrest warrant be issued against him.

The Haryana police may arrest Rampal late at night and produce him before the court on Monday.

To foil the arrest, Rampal's ashram in Haryana's Barwala turned into a fortress and his followers have been gathering outside the Chandigarh railway station since the warrant was issued against him.

The Chandigarh administration now fears that his protesting followers could pour into the city, disrupting traffic and normal life. Violence cannot be ruled out.

The police and paramilitary personnel have been have deployed across the city - especially at bus terminuses and railway stations. Checkposts have been set up on arterial roads.

Last year, Rampal's followers had clashed with villagers in Rohtak, in which three people had been killed. Earlier this year, his supporters misbehaved with lawyers at the Hisar court during a hearing.

Rampal has shifted base to Hisar's Barwala after he got bail. But he failed to appear before the court on November 3, following which the court ordered his arrest.
