Hyderabad:
TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu and some party legislators were taken into preventive custody when they sat on a protest near the state legislature demanding that the government immediately help farmers hit by natural calamities in Andhra Pradesh.
They were shifted to Goshamahal and after observing a night-long protest they are planning to take out a 'paadayatra' to the state legislature tomorrow morning.
Naidu sat on the road in protest after leaders of farmers' organisations were prevented entry into the assembly for submitting a memorandum to the government on the farmer's woes.
Naidu came out of the Assembly after it was adjourned for the day and sought to speak to the farmers' leaders. But by then the police took the farmers' leaders into preventive custody for violating the prohibitory orders.
A group of TDP MLAs who came out in support of the agitating farmers' leaders were also taken into custody.
Though police offered to let Naidu and others off late in the evening, they declined to go and announced that they would go to the assembly tomorrow straight from police custody.
Meanwhile, TDP workers thronged the Goshamahal stadium in large numbers condemning the detention of their leaders.
TDP politburo member Yanamala Ramakrishnudu came down heavily on the Kiran Kumar Reddy government for detaining Chandrababu and others saying a demons rule was prevailing in the state.
The state Assembly could not discuss the farmers' issue despite the subjected being listed top on the agenda as the House was stuck in pandemonium over the lifting of cases against students who took part in the separate statehood agitations.
The TDP, the Left parties and the Praja Rajyam had been demanding that the government immediately discuss the plight of farmers and lend a helping hand as they were worst hit by a series of calamities this year.
The TDP, in fact, demanded that all crop loans to distressed farmers be waived.
Though the Congress government agreed to debate the subject in the ongoing winter session of the Assembly, the separatist TRS has been hijacking the agenda and not letting the House transact business.
